I was invited to do a skateboard for Ride On PDX 2014, a show benefiting arts education in the Pacific Northwest. The show is filled with incredible decks from a bevy of talented folks, you can check out all the boards here. You can also buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win your favorite skateboard and at the same time support a good cause. My piece for the Love For Sale: Valentines Influenced By Talking Heads show at Land Gallery. Opens tonight February 13th! There will be lots of super brilliant work by over 40 artists, you better run run run down there and check it out! Inspired by the song “Psycho Killer”, two color hand pulled screenprint, designed with ink on vellum, torn paper and photocopies right on the screen. Limited edition of 20, approximately 11×14 inches.

Put A Bird In It

I was super excited to design another birdhouse for Wemake’s Put A Bird In It event for Design Week Portland (check out last years birdhouse). There was an amazing amount talent on display from the participants again this year, I was blown away! You can see the rest of the awesome birdhouses for yourself here! It was a really great event that raised $10,000 to support arts and music education. I got to meet the super nice person who bought my birdhouse so that was awesome too. Check out the recap!

Design Week Portland Workshop

Super big thanks to all the talented people who participated in my workshop on Wednesday, you guys rocked it! You all really made it awesome, I had a super fun time. (Note for next time: I will put out the cookies before everyone leaves not after. I totally spaced on that, very embarrassing.) I was super flattered by all the interest in the workshop, I know it filled up fast and there was over 100 people on the wait-list. I’m going to figure out how I can include more people next time.

Forgotten Tarot Cards

The goal of the workshop was to design two print positives only using analog techniques for a two color screenprint (end results pictured above). No computers were allowed. I asked everyone to concept and design a super enigmatic and hopefully weird Forgotten Tarot Card. They really nailed it! Then they jumped into making positives of their design on a worksheet with a variety of techniques, Rubylith, oiled halftones photocopies, ink on velum, cutout construction paper and collage of bits of old transparencies (see an example below). It was fast paced and they had to really trust themselves and make quick decisions embracing any mistakes as part of the process.

Free yourself from the shackles of computer oppression!

I’m super excited to be doing a workshop for Design Week Portland. In this fast paced workshop participants will work without computers to concept and design their own small print. This will involve a variety of techniques for making screen-print positives, rubylith, ink on vellum, cut paper etc. The goal is to embrace making quick decision, trusting your instincts and diving into making. The final designs will later be screen-printed and everyone will get two copies! It’s a fun chance to shake up your process with an analog adventure.
