Mad Sweeney

Mad Sweeney

American Gods

This is an illustration of Mad Sweeney from the novel American Gods by Neil Gaiman. It’s a great book and being an Irish expat I was really drawn to the character of Mad Sweeney. He’s a hard sort of truckstop redneck leprechaun. He somehow simultaneously defies and confirms the image Americans have of Ireland. It would have been tempting to use green in this piece but somehow I don’t think Mad Sweeney would have approved of anything quite so cliche.
This is the second of the American Gods pieces I did for the art jam at Superpunch
