Cherry Bomb Dopplebock | 2002
I love beer, especially local beer (see this print for proof) so I was super excited to be asked to design a label for the Widmer Brothers Brewing 30 beers for 30 years project.
Initially “Cherry Bomb” made me think of lurid mid-century pin-up art. But I wanted to reapropriate that concept for 2002, with a more empowered and Portlandy female icon. My inspiration came Riot Grrrl and punk aesthetic and figures like Kathleen Hanna, Brody Dalle and Poison Ivy. But also from the broader influence of women in music in 2002; Avril Lavigne, AGSFB, The Donnas, Gwen Stephani, Pink, Saraha Hotnights et al.
30 Beers for 30 Years
To celebrate their 30th anniversary Portland’s Widmer Brothers Brewing asked 30 local creatives to design labels for 30 limited release beers. Each beer individually crafted to representing one year in their 30 year history, 30 beers for 30 years. Definitely check out the site to see all the other amazing labels, with great info and sick animations! Also check out the beer itself at your local supplier!
